Inspired by Mrs. Concepcion…

Here’s a puzzle that will make you flip—syllables, that is. The answer to the first clue in each pair is a familiar two-syllable word. Reverse those syllables phonetically (by their sound, not spelling) and you’ll come up with the second answer. For example, take the two clues “impertinent” and “teetertotter.” The answers are “saucy” (which means impertinent) and “seesaw” (for teetertotter). See how the syllables were flipped? Now try your hand at it.

1. Fundamental * Where the doctor works on a naval ship (2 words)
2. Government assistance for the poor * Goodbye
3. Worst possible test score * Optimistic
4. Relevant * What Jesus was born in
5. Sofa * Cups, saucers, sugar bowl, etc. (2 words)
6. A clock or watch * Period between wars
7. Fabulous * Chase after
8. Have faith in * Not disturb
9. Metric weight, informally * Understated (hyphenated)
10. Student, say, with a summer office job * Go to bed (2 words)

ANSWERS:
1. Basic/sick bay; 2. Welfare/farewell; 3. Zero/rosy; 4. Germane/manger; 5. Settee/tea set; 6. Timepeace/peacetime; 7. Super/pursue; 8. Believe/leave be; 9. Kilo/low-key; 10. Intern/turn in
